Rita Hao was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1994 with an A.B. in East Asian Studies and Fine Art, where she was awarded a Hoopes Prize for her senior thesis on contemporary Chinese art of the 1990s.

She graduated from Columbia Law School in 1997, and joined the law firm of McCutchen, Doyle, Brown and Enersen (now Bingham McCutchen), where she specialized in intellectual property litigation. In 1999, she joined the law firm of Latham and Watkins. While at Latham, Ms. Hao worked in patent litigation, employment litigation, and general complex civil litigation in both the federal and state courts. Ms. Hao also served on Latham’s pro bono committee. Her work on that committee culminated in Latham’s winning an award from the Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach organization for its commitment to the Asian-American community. From 2002-2005, Ms. Hao clerked for the Honorable Phyllis J. Hamilton in the Northern District of California.

Ms. Hao is admitted to practice in the California state and federal courts, and is a member of the patent bar. She is also active with the Asian-American Bar Association and the Asian Law Caucus.
